Dubai:

A Pakistani man has been arrested over the death of an Emirati military official in a hit and run incident.

The man was killed on Tuesday on the Dubai-Al Ain road, a senior police official told Gulf News.

Lt Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Dubai Police confirmed yesterday that the 24-year-old Emirati, who worked for the military, died when a Pakistani truck driver hit him before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim on the road.

“The accident happened at 2.45pm on Tuesday on the Dubai-Al Ain road when the victim was parking his car on the right side of the road, on the hard shoulder. He was waiting for his friend to bring him petrol because his car had run out,” he said.

Al Merri said the Pakistani man, identified as 30-year-old A.H., hit his victim who was standing outside his car, throwing him 11 metres before he landed on the road.

The man died at the scene, of severe head injuries.

“A.H. who was driving a white pick-up ran away from the accident scene.

“The public reported the accident to police who rushed there.

“In our hunt for the accused it came to our knowledge that he worked for a contracting company in Dubai as a truck driver. We searched the whole area for the pick-up he drove at the time of the accident.” he said.

Al Merri said that at around 9.30pm the pick-up was spotted on a service road in the Al Khor Industrial Area.

He said: “The pick-up was found with blood stains still on it. The accused tried to fix the damage to the truck from the accident; he fixed the side mirror.”

He added policemen waited for the accused to come and collect the pick-up.

“A.H. reached the place at 12 midnight to check the car, and he was arrested by CID immediately,” Al Merri said.

Al Merri confirmed the accused admitted his crime, claiming he has fallen asleep for seconds while driving and did not notice the victim on the road.

He added: “This is not an excuse, that he slept while driving.

“Another Pakistani man has also been arrested for helping the truck driver fix the damage to the truck.”

The case has been transferred to the traffic public prosecution and A.H. will face charges of killing a man in a traffic accident and running away from the accident scene.

“The insurance company also said that they will have nothing to do with the accused and that no insurance will cover the accident because the accused ran away from the scene,” Al Merri said.
