Abu Dhabi: An Arab man was sentenced to one year in prison followed by deportation for threatening his colleague to publish personal pictures of her in exchange for a sum of money, the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance ruled.

The man, who worked for the public sector obtained the photos by emptying the contents of her mobile phone, which she was charging through the computer, and keeping them without her knowledge or consent.

Months later, the accused contacted his colleague via e-mail posing as a woman and threatened to publish the images if she failed to give him Dh50,000 within two days.

Refusing to succumb to blackmail the plaintiff informed the authorities who tracked the location from which the e-mail was sent and arrested the defendant at his workplace.

The accused confessed to stealing the images and sending the e-mail but denied threatening and blackmailing her and said that he requested the money as a joke.
