Sharjah: Sharjah Police have arrested a man for allegedly selling handheld lasers known as Blue Laser. The devices are hazardous and can burn or blind victims.

The man, police said, was selling the units to potential customers using BlackBerry Messenger and social media.

Police said the Yemeni man F.S.M allegedly sold the devioces to young men and children in Sharjah.

Following a tipoff, the Criminal Investigation Department at Sharjah Police tracked down the suspect and found 10 devices in his possession.

Handheld laser devices can damage or burn skin depending on the intensity of the light emitted. Lasers have been banned in countries around the world after incidents of aircraft pilots reporting that people on the ground point the laser beams directly into the cockpits of aircraft.

The suspect, police said, admitted to selling the illegal devices for Dh950 each.

The suspect used names of delivery companies operating in the country because he wanted to hide his identity for fear of being discovered by authorities.

The suspect has been referred to public prosecution for further action.

Sharjah Police have warned the public against buying or operating laser devices.
