Ras Al Khaimah: Police in Ras Al Khaimah have arrested a man for allegedly conning people by telling them that he can pay half their traffic fines electronically, a senior police officer said.

Mohammad Ali Al Hammadi, Director of the Organised Crime Unit at the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Investigation Department, said: "We received information that an Arab man was allegedly conning people via internet websites, blogs and chatting sites by making them believe that he can pay half the value of their traffic fines through the e-payment system. He asked them to send him money through exchange houses to his home country."

The suspect is said to have lured his victims through the internet, taking advantage of his excellent knowledge and experience in the use of modern technology to commit his crimes, Al Hammadi said.

"Upon receiving the information, a police team was formed to hunt down the suspect and intensify surveillance on him. After collecting all the information and identifying the suspect and his residence, a trap was set up to contact him electronically and conclude a deal with him to pay the fines of a vehicle," Al Hammadi said.

Investigations suggested the suspect allegedly paid the fines using stolen credit cards that caused their holders and banks that issued them financial losses. The suspect was arrested and referred to judicial authorities.

Al Hammadi urged the public to take precautions while dealing with others through the internet or processing their transactions electronically, and urged them to immediately report any suspected matter to police so as they would not fall victims to such e-scams.
