Dubai: A suspected drug dealer, on the run for almost a year, has been arrested by Dubai Police in a joint operation.

The unemployed, 44-year-old Emirati, identified as M.A.M, was arrested in a operation involving the Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah police.

He was arrested 10 days ago on the Dubai bypass road as he was headed to Jebel Ali. Police allegedly found different kinds of illegal drugs in his car.

Major General Abdul Jalil Mahdi Al Asmawi, director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at Dubai Police, said the stash of drugs included 6.252 kg of hashish, 23gm of heroin and 42 tablets of Tramadol, in addition to Captagon tablets and methamphetamine (crystals) also known as Shibo.

The three police forces came together to apprehend the man, described as a dangerous drug dealer who, according to Maj Gen Al Asmawi, peddled drugs all over the country.

Maj Gen Al Asmawi said: “M.A.M was arrested near the round about on the bypass after police were tipped off that he was taking the drugs to another emirate.”

Captagon is a synthetic stimulant while methamphetamine is a central nervous system stimulant drug that is similar in structure to amphetamine.

“The central information department at Dubai Police, in cooperation with the anti-narcotic departments at Abu Dhabi and Sharjah police, worked on the operation to arrest M.A.M. He is one of the most wanted persons engaged in selling drugs in the country,” Maj Gen Al Asmawi said.

The suspect was interrogated at the Dubai Police anti-narcotics department.

“M.A.M admitted to his crimes and said that he works with another Asian drug dealer, who he claimed is the supplier. The accused said that he dealt with five kinds of drugs — hashish, heroin, Tramadol, Captagon and methamphetamine.”

Maj Gen Al Asmawi promised an extensive investigation into drug peddling and use based on the information provided by the accused.

“We will have no mercy on those who deal with illegal drugs in the country,” he said

The accused has been charged with consuming, selling, smuggling and distributing drugs in the country, especially among the youth.

The case has been transferred to the public prosecution for further investigation.
