DUBAI:  Dubai Police Department of Criminal Investigation cracked the mystery behind the disappearance of vehicles owned by banks and car rental shops, with the arrest of a gang specialising in stealing and smuggling cars under fake shipping certificates.

Major Saeed Al Ayalli, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigation said they received information about a group of Arab nationals led by a man identified as M.M.C., who were stealing and shipping cars out of the UAE.

The gang used fake passports and forged certificates. A team went to the suspect's house where three car keys were found in the possession of M.M.C.'S brother A.M.C. He was arrested and the keys found with him led police to the vehicles that were kept in the building's parking lot.

Another suspect A.N. was later arrested after police found that he rented a vehicle and handed it over to the gang. When questioned, he said the previous boss of the gang, now in Dubai Central Jail for stealing cars, ordered him to rent the car. The gang used to send the brand name and the year of manufacture of the car to a forgery artist outside the UAE, who prepared fake certificates.

Fourteen other keys, five fake certificates and 16 cars were also retrieved from the gang.
