Ajman: Ajman Police have slashed speed limits on some internal roads in the emirate to bolster safety through slower moving traffic, said a top police official.
Ajman traffic authorities have decided to cut the speed limit for trucks and buses to 60km/h from 80km/h following a series of deadly single- and multiple-vehicle accidents that police said involved high rates of speed and driver error.
Speed radars will catch vehicles now travelling at 81km given that cameras are programmed to give motorists a 20km room for error in their rate of travel.
Brigadier Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, Deputy Chief of Ajman Police, said the new speed limit has been enforced on six internal roads in the emirate.
Brigadier Al Nuaimi said that most of the fatal accidents have been clearly caused due to speeding.
“We have decided to cut the speed limits on some of the vital roads in the emirate where many fatal accidents have taken place,” he said.
The roads targeted for reduced speeds, said Brigadier Al Nuaimi, include Al Ittihad Road, Shaikh Zayed Road, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Road, University Road, Shaikh Ammar Road and Shaikh Rashid Bin Saeed Road.
The Ajman Traffic Department launched an awareness campaign to make drivers of trucks and buses aware of the changes.
Brochures in different languages will be distributed to motorists on the roads.
The decision will take effect from December 1 and Ajman Municipality will change all the speed signboards on these roads, he said.
