Manama: Qatari authorities are investigating six pirates after they were caught in Qatari waters, said a spokesman for the Coasts and Borders Security Department (CBSD).
Two boats used to attack Qatari fishing vessels were also seized after they were spotted by the department staff during a patrol of the northern gas field areas.
"As the Coast Guard team approached the boats, the pirates tried to escape and ignored instructions to stop. However, they were eventually forced to stop after a chase and firing of a number of bullets," the spokesman said, without mentioning the nationality of the pirates.
During the ensuing inspection, the patrolling team found several cutting tools, masks and communication equipment inside the boats.
A large quantity of fish was also found, even though there was no fishing equipment, an indication that the boats had attacked the Qatari fishing vessels and robbed their catch.
The CBSD has recently foiled many attempts to infiltrate Qatari territorial waters.
