Manama: South Korea will hold a cultural week in Qatar to contribute to the celebrations of Doha as the 2010 Arab Capital of Culture.

South Korean Ambassador in Doha Chang See-jeong said that the cultural festivities would start on October 11 and would include a Korean food festival to introduce South Korean cuisine to the people in Qatar.

See-jeong said Korean chefs, a nutrition professor and food and beverage professionals would be flown in for the occasion.

“We will hold the food festival three times, at the ambassador’s residence, at Qatar University and maybe in one of the five-star hotels in Doha,” See-jeong told Qatari daily The Peninsula.

Traditional Korean dishes like kimchi, bulgogi, and pimpap, will be highlighted and explained. Samples of Kimchi, a mixture of various pickled vegetables, and Bulgogi, Korea’s most popular beef dish will be served as some of the chefs show visitors how to prepare them.

Korean singers and drummers will be present throughout the festival taekwondo competitions and demonstrations will involve young students.

"We are keen on introducing Qatar to more South Koreans and inviting Qataris to know more about South Korea," he said.

"There are now six Qataris studying in South Korea. The Korean Government Scholarship Programme is designed to provide higher education in Korea for international students in order to promote international exchange in education and mutual friendship between the participating countries," the ambassador said.

Qatar and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1974 and opened embassies in 1976.
