Qatar’s mushrooming, but nameless streets, open public grounds, parks and avenues are to be given official names under a new scheme promoted by the Central Municipal Council (CMC).
An ad hoc panel to be formed by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning will be tasked with finding apt names for streets and public spaces after receiving suggestions. Names will be approved by the multi-ministry committee and then referred to the Central Municipal Council only if they are suitable to the Qatari culture and environment, The Peninsula reported on Saturday.
“The Committee can also propose its own adequate names for the unnamed streets and public spaces directly to the CMC. The CMC would then refer them to the CMC members of the respective constituencies. The members can hold a public hearing to reach a consensus on the name”, Jasem Al Malki, the CMC deputy chairman, said.
Several new streets and public places, resulting from Qatar’s unprecedented construction boom and urban growth, have not been given official names or numbers, leading to confusion and to the hampering of swift emergency and regular action, Al Malki said.
In Kharatiyat, residents who request an ambulance have to send someone to the local petrol station to link with the hospital vehicle and guide the medical team to the place where they are needed.
Firefighters are fighting acute difficulties locating the place where their services are needed.
