Manama: Qatar's Independent Schools might soon launch a students' parliament in a move to prepare young people for active political participation in nation-building.
Sa'ad Bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, the education minister, told a group of students on Saturday that he was about to recommend that the operators of independent schools pave the way to set up a students' parliament in their institution, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported.
The minister was addressing an event at Mohammad Bin Abdul Aziz Al Mana Secondary Independent School following successful elections to the students' parliament there.
"I am proud of you and salute you for setting up a students' parliament," he said.
The parliament would give students the chance to debate issues and to learn to accept the opinions of other people, the minister said.
"It will prepare them for active political participation in nation building and inculcate in them democratic values," he was quoted as saying.
