Manama: At least 32 Qatari nationals, who were laid-off from their jobs last year, have approached the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) to demand their reinstatement.

The complainants were among a group of government employees who were let go after a new human resource law was enforced.

Even though they receive monthly salaries and will continue to be paid until they find alternative state jobs, they say they have been deprived of a number of allowances.

What’s more, some of the women claim they were told that they’d be given new positions, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Tuesday. In their plea, they challenged the decision of the government to re-employ them in other roles, calling it "unjustified" and arguing they were qualified and experienced in their previous jobs.

"In whatever government departments we were employed, we were doing our job very well. We have university degrees and our performance was good, so there was no justification for targeting us in the retrenchment drive," the newspaper quoted them as saying.
They also pointed out that although there were several openings in the government sector, they were being over looked for these positions and new employees recruited instead.

"This is against the assurances we were given at the time of being given the marching orders," they said in their plea.
