Muscat: A three-year-old Omani toddler died and his two-year-old sister was seriously injured when they were trapped inside a burning car in Jalan in the eastern region, according to a press release from Royal Oman Police (ROP) on Saturday.

According to the police, the father had gone for prayers, leaving two toddlers in the car. “The children played with the cigarette lighter inside the car and that caused the fire,” a police spokesperson said.

He added that hearing screams of children from the burning car, people rushed and pulled out both the children and rushed them to nearby hospital but the boy could not be revived.

A team of fire-fighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire.

The police have appealed to all motorists not to leave children unattended in the vehicles and not to leave cigarette lighters within the reach of children.

Meanwhile, according to the ROP statistics 13 people died and 160 were injured in 133 road accidents across the country last week.
