Muscat: Six Omani children—four girls and two boys—drowned in Wadi Markha near Al Kamil Al Wafi’s in the eastern region of Oman, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP).
One Omani family lost three children in the incident on Tuesday afternoon when the children were swimming in the wadi.
A search and rescue team rushed to the spot as soon as the police were alerted.
However, on reaching the wadi, they found no sight of the children - just their clothes left on the riverbank.
Divers from the team fished out all six bodies from the same spot in the river. They were brought to Sabt Health Centre for identification.
According to a local police officer, stationed at the nearby police station, Wadi Markha is notorious for drowning incidents.
The ROP has reiterated its call to all citizens and residents to make children’s safety a priority.
”Children should never be left unattended during all outings, particularly near high risk areas such as wadis,” a statement from ROP said.
