Muscat: The body of the 26-year-old Omani sailor, Mohammad Al Alawi, who went missing at sea in Croatia last October was recently recovered by the Croatian Coast Guard.
An official at Oman Sail, the government’s sailing authority, told Gulf News that the Croatian authorities notified Oman Sail about the matter on Monday.
The official added that the DNA samples that were taken from the decomposed body matched Mohammad Al Alawi’s.
The official said the father of the deceased is in Croatia to double check if the body found is that of his son.
The official did not give any further details about the repatriation of the body to Oman.
Al Alawi was part of a five-man crew heading to Trieste in Italy to take part in the Barcolana international sailing regatta.
He was lost at sea off the coast of Croatia after falling overboard last October.
The Croatian coast guard declared that it had called off search operations for the missing Al Alawi, which lasted for six days since he disappeared.
