Muscat: In what could be termed as a rare surgery in Oman’s medical history, surgeons at the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) Hospital removed the kidneys of a brain-dead patient and transplanted into two patients suffering from renal complications.

Leading Omani urologists Dr. Qasim Bin Mohammad Al Busaidi headed the team of surgeons during the 18-hour-long surgery.

The two patients, Arabic daily Al Watan reported Wednesday, who received the organs are recovering well.

Dr. Al Busaidi said the family members of the brain-dead person had agreed to donate his organs to save the lives of other patients. The two patients, aged 20 and 50, were chosen after confirming that their blood groups matched with the donor’s.

Though the kidneys can be stored in ice for up to 36 hours, it is better to conduct the transplant as soon as possible as it will reduce further complications.

The doctor said the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital has all the facilities to conduct complicated surgeries but is facing a shortage of organ donors.
