Indian cargo ship sinks off Oman coast

Muscat: An Indian cargo ship, with 11 crew members on board, sunk off the coast of Jalan Bani Bu Ali province on Saturday morning, an official at Oman police, told Gulf News.

All crew members were rescued by Omani fishermen and are reported to be in good health.

The vessel was on its way from Sharjah to Yemen’s Al Mukalla port and was carrying 69 vehicles, food stuff, tyres and engine oils.

The vessel sank due to damages caused by overloading.

In July, 17 Indian sailors were rescued by Omani fishermen and Omani coast guards after their dhow sunk off Masirah island, transporting livestock from India to the UAE.

On July 22, a vessel carrying of 800 tonnes of plastic items was sunk off Masirah Island, with thousands of plastic items washing ashore near the beach where turtles were nesting in the island.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs sent a team to clean up the debris and to save the turtles.
