Manama: Expatriates leaving Kuwait will have to submit evidence that they have settled their traffic fines before they are allowed to leave the country, a senior official said.
Kuwait recorded 996,436 traffic violations in the first three months of 2010.
Brigadier Ihsan Al Aweesh, traffic directorate deputy director, said that next month Kuwait will adopt a new discharge system to collect traffic fines from foreigners who are leaving the country.
"The evidence requirement system will be launched in cooperation with the immigration general and the information system directorates," he was quoted as saying by Al Seyassah newspaper.
He did not, however, divulge figures about the expatriates who leave the country without settling their dues.
Al Aweesh said that his directorate recorded 480,000 speeding violations in the first trimester of this year, a 700 per cent increase over the same period last year.
"We also had 106,000 traffic light jumping violations in the first three months of the year, a 670 per cent increase over the first trimester of 2009," he said.
Conversations between traffic policemen and drivers stopped for alleged violations will henceforth be recorded as a way of tackling harassment complaints by drivers, mainly women, Al Aweesh said.
