Police in Kuwait are on the lookout for the vandals who spray painted “Iran will invade Kuwait” on the outside wall of a school.
State security and public security forces surrounded Al Waleed Ibn Abdul Malik School in Fardows and launched an investigation before they ordered the cleaning of the wall, Kuwaiti daily Al Watan reported on Friday.
The incident was a bitter reminder of the Iraqi invasion of the north Arabian Gulf state in August 1990 and happened in the middle of a tense situation in Kuwait after media reported the busting of a spy cell allegedly working for Iran’s Revolution Guards.
Newspapers said that the espionage ring was cooperating closely with a diplomat in the Iranian embassy in Kuwait City. Salafi MP Mohammad Al Hayef called for the expulsion of the Iranian ambassador and the recall of the Kuwaiti envoy in Tehran. Bilateral accords between Kuwait City and Tehran should also be suspended, he said in a statement to the media.
The coverage was suspended after the public prosecutor imposed a gag, citing the need for serene conditions for the investigations. Bahrain last week said that it arrested a Bahraini in connection with the case.
Tehran and Iran’s ambassadors in Kuwait and Bahrain have denied any involvement with the spy cell, saying that the reports were “lies and fabrications targeting Iran.”
