Manama: A Kuwaiti politician has requested the country's foreign minister to explain details of the assurances Kuwait has received from Iran and Russia about the high level technology used in Iran's Bushehr nuclear reactor.

"You have issued a statement last week about Kuwait receiving assurances from Iran and Russia about environmental threats from Bushehr nuclear reactor," MP Waleed Al Tabtabai told Shaikh Mohammad Al Salem Al Sabah.

"I would like to know the nature of the assurances and whether they were communicated orally or in writing. I would like also to know whether the assurances included technical data and facts about the reactor and if they were presented to competent Kuwaiti establishments. If so, what was their assessment?"

Last week, Shaikh Mohammad told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that Kuwait, "received Iranian assurances in addition to Russian assurances saying that the technology used in this plant is of the utmost level."

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast, on the same day, dismissed concerns by Tehran's neighbours, saying that the Bushehr nuclear power plant had high safety standards.

"The Bushehr nuclear plant meets high safety standards and there are no environmental concerns about it," he said.
