Dubai: The large quantities of drugs seized recently in Kuwait originated from Syria and are linked to terrorist groups, a security source has said.

Kuwait last week seized more than seven million tablets concealed in iron bars carried in trucks that crossed into the country.

The first consignment included four million tablets while the second shipment had 3.5 million illegal drugs, the security source told Kuwaiti daily Al Qabas.

One of the smugglers who were arrested confessed that the drugs were given to him by members of a terror group and asked him to take them to a man who lived in Kuwait.

Investigations have led to the identification of people in Syria who oversaw the operations to export drugs to the Gulf.

The source said there was information about plans to turn Kuwait into a transit point for drugs to be distributed in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
