Manama: Bahrain's ambassador in Washington has denied a media report on a statement she allegedly made on Iran during a visit to Frederick Community College on Thursday.
Frederick News Post reported that ambassador Houda Nonoo allegedly said that Iran wanted to have control of the region and that the proposition was very scary.
However, Nonoo denied the statement.
"What has been published does not reflect the keen interest and steady quest of Bahrain and Iran to deepen and boost bilateral relations at all levels for the sake of their higher interest and benefit of their peoples," Nonoo said, as quoted by the Bahrain News Agency (BNA) on Sunday.
Nonoo who was appointed ambassador to the US in June 2008 and who serves as ambassador to Canada and Brazil last month had to deny a statement on Iran's nuclear programme published in the Washington Times.
According to the US daily, Nonoo said that "if Iran has [a nuclear] capability, nobody is going to be able to stop them."
However, Bahrain's foreign ministry said then that "it appears that the ambassador's comments may have been inaccurately reported or have been misinterpreted or misunderstood."
"Bahrain has consistently made clear its support for the right of all states to the peaceful civilian use of nuclear energy, transparently and in accordance with the relevant international framework and safeguards," the foreign ministry said. "Bahrain has made clear on a number of occasions that the Islamic Republic of Iran is no exception to this right."
