Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Monday urged the Election Commission to extend voting rights to overseas Pakistanis.
A task force should be constituted for the purpose, the PTI leader said after meeting Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Raza Khan.
He said seven million Pakistanis live abroad and contribute greatly to the national economy through their remittances.
Imran Khan said he had also suggested constitution of a task force by the commission for introduction of electronic voting system in the country.
The PTI leader led protests last year for several months to mount pressure on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to set up a top level judicial commission to investigate alleged rigging in 2013 general election.
He called of the campaign for political consenus on fighting terrorism following the killing of 135 children in a Taliban attack on an army public school in Peshawar.
The PTI chairman has however warned that his party could revert to street agitation if an empowered judicial commission for probing rigging charges is not established.
The government says it is ready to launch a judicial probe but the two sides have been unable to agree on terms of reference for the proposed commission and a deeadloock on the issue persists.
