Patna: A District Magistrate (DM) in Bihar gave his retiring employee, who had served him for more than three decades, a unique gift. He drove the driver home.
Munger district magistrate Uday Kumar Singh, who is also known as District Collector for in charge of revenue collection, is the executive head of a district.
On Saturday, a farewell function was held at Singh’s office for his driver, Sampat Ram, who was retiring after serving the office for about 34 years. At the event, Ram was given his severance package: cash dues and a bouquet.
Once the celebration was over, the driver went towards the DM’s car, waiting to ferry his boss home for the last time, but he got a pleasant surprise instead.
“Today, I will drive the car and you will take my seat,” the official told him. Singh therefore took the wheel and dropped Ram home.
“This is the biggest gift of my life. I can’t forget bit in the whole of my lifetime,” Ram told Gulf News on Sunday.
He added his boss had never let him face problems since he joined office; he had helped him liberally.
Ram had been appointed the DM’s driver in 1983. He served as driver to the district magistrates of Lakhisarai, Jamui and finally Munger, where he had been appointed for the past 32 years.
