DUBAI Organisers of the inaugural Community League believe the new league starting next month will give the UAE rugby players a chance to enjoy more games at a competitive level.

Launched by the UAE Rugby Federation, the new league will start from September 18 and will be played every second week of the month. “It gives teams opportunities to play rugby and will also allow more players and enthusiasts to enjoy rugby within the UAE at a competitive, yet social level,” said Gabby Couzens of UAERF.

Annual affair

A total of 11 teams will take part in the inaugural league that include Al Ain Amblers 3rds, Abu Dhabi Harlequins 3rds, Arabian Knights 2nds, Beaver Nomads 1sts, Dubai Sharks 2nds, Dubai Exiles 3rds, Dubai Hurricanes 3rds, Jebel Ali Dragons 3rds, The Rocks 1sts, Xodus Wasps 2nds and Dubai Airports Shaheen 1sts.

“The league will run at the same time as the UAE Premiership and UAE Conference League and will be an annual affair,” she added.

With efforts to develop Emirati players, the new league offers the Dubai Airports Shaheen 1st XV’s side a chance to play the 15-a-side format.

UAE Rugby National Coach and Performance Manager Roleof Kotze, said: “We’ve seen the Emirati rugby players pool grow to a number that we can sustain a regular 15-man squad, and the Community League platform will be valuable in introducing the XV’s format to them.

“It’s time for these players to be exposed to a more technical, physical game, which will assist in their ongoing development to competitively represent the UAE at local and international tournaments,” he added.

Historically a 7’s team, Beaver Nomads are relishing the opportunity to participate in the new league. “We played a number of friendly XV’s games last season and got an appetite to play more regularly,” said Beaver’s Dan Whitley. “We have made good progress over the last few years and our sole ambition for the Community Division is to fulfill every fixture and enjoy playing rugby. We’re a social but competitive team and will be playing every game to win,”
