IPL allegations muddy the game

Regulation of betting organisations will help protect the integrity of cricket

Last updated:

With the murky allegations that already surround the Indian Premier League (IPL), a sting operation confirming that players indulge in spot fixing seems to be the final nail in its coffin. Five players have so far been suspended and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has launched an inquiry but the brand value of the league has been considerably damaged.

The benefits generated by the IPL on cricketers, team owners and corporate companies has been tremendous. Players are paid huge amounts and the glitz and glamour that is associated with it makes it a natural hunting ground for corruption.

What needs to be wiped out is first the root of this cancer that threatens to destroy the integrity of cricket; the regulation of betting organisations and creating a mechanism that can effectively control corruption in the game.

Those who are guilty should receive stiff sentences and even life bans to ensure that their influence is never felt on the game again.
