Dubai: Despacito, a song that has become one of the most streamed track of all time with more than 4.6 billion plays across streaming platforms, now has an Omani version.
The Arabic video clip, by Omani singer Mohammad Al Munji, is called They Torture Them… Despacito, and talks about how expensive it is to get married these days.
It received 1.2 million views since it was uploaded on You Tube on July 25, 2017.
Going by the same familiar Latino tune, and supported by rap verses from Mohammad Al Adwani, the song explains the hurdles that young men have to face if they want to get married.
The video clip shows a man going to a home, asking for a girl’s hand in marriage. But the father puts conditions that have to be met first: A dowry, jewellery, house and car.
The singer then laments about the old days, when life was simpler, and all that men needed to get married was his dishdasha, sandals and Omani mussar (traditional headgear).
The message then follows by saying that marriages should be simple and never expensive.
“Keep the dowry simple,” says Al Munji. “A woman and a man love each other, they compromise and their parents agree, it’s simple,” he sings.
