What is it?

American company Motorola Mobility's latest smartphone: the Motorola Razr.

Wait, wasn't there a Razr before?

Yes, the original Motorola Razr V3 was launched in 2004 and became one of the most successful mobile phone models, throwing manufacturer Motorola into the big league. Then a series of Razr-like and Razr-related phones immediately followed suit — gold versions too, no less — before the company realised it was not innovating enough and that the competition was racing by.

Since then, Motorola Mobility has produced a number of smartphones and a tablet (Xoom), hooking up with Android as an operating system. A superstar device that would attain legendary status has so far eluded the company. That is, the company is hoping, until now.

What's special about this one?

For starters, the new Razr has the same DNA as the original in that it is superthin. At 0.28 inch thick (the iPhone 4S is 0.37 inch), it is one of the slimmest smartphones out there.

The rest of the features include a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED screen, a front-facing 720p HD video camera and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 16GB of on-board storage with an additional 16GB MicroSD card slot and is powered by the Android 2.3.5 operating system.

Other niceties include what Motorola calls a "splash-guard" coating, which is supposed to protect the phone should you get it wet (not submerge it in water though, we're quite sure) while the back is coated with a soft material called Kevlar, apparently usually found in high-end speedboats and bulletproof jackets. It looks nice, we have to say, but we'll have to let it all hang now until we have our hands-on review.

When is it out and for how much?

The Motorola Razr is now available with all leading electronics retailers in the UAE for Dh2,599.
