British TV chef Gary Rhodes discusses healthy eating for children in Dubai on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

Celebrity chef, restaurateur and author Gary Rhodes has tied up with the newly opened Foremarke School in Dubai to educate school students on the importance of healthy eating. He will also bring a slice of the traditional British concept of “family eating” to the UAE with his ‘Festival of Rhodes’ programme, which runs for three weeks in June.

As part of the programme, Year 1 to 6 students of the British preparatory school in Al Barsha will also tend an organic garden which will support the kitchen.

“There’s no better way to get kids interested than getting them involved hands on. No child likes to watch a cooking demonstration. But get him in the kitchen and see the smile on his face,” Rhodes told tabloid! on Tuesday at Foremarke School.

To prove his point, the chef got a few students to prepare the high tea served at the end of the presentation.

“All it needed was a little sugar dusting on Queen’s cakes to see the joy on their faces,” the Michelin star chef said.

Starting September, Rhodes will be working with the school’s catering company to provide traditional formal lunches for its pupils, featuring British school favourites such as Sunday roasts, steak and kidney pudding, toad in the hole and jam roly poly. They will also be taught table manners along with healthy eating and food appreciation skills.

The ingredients will be mainly sourced from local farmer markets apart from the school’s own organic garden. The school will also offer a home economics course, where pupils will cook and follow Rhodes’ recipes.
