A smoky weekend

Perry & Blackwelder’s, the new smokehouse at Madinat Jumeirah (occupying the space where Barzar used to be), is celebrating its launch with a free-to-enter 10-day ‘Smokin’ Fair’, January 22-31. Three food stalls serving dishes including wings tossed four ways (Dh30 for five, Dh55 for 10), short rib and turkey sliders (Dh40 for three or Dh75 for six) and barbecue platters of their signature brisket, turkey and hot wings with white bread, potato salad, pickles and onions — smoked a different way each day. Fun stuff includes live country music comes from Wes Hayden and his band, guest beverages and a rodeo bull. Head there 5-10pm, Sunday to Thursday; 2-10pm, Friday and Saturday and see pitmaster Lawrence Wells in action as they cook the meats low and slow.

Kilts at the ready

January 25 is Burn’s Night, a celebration of Scotland’s food and poetry. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy the Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race — ie, haggis — head to Reform Social and Grill in Jumeirah Lakes, where there’s a special a la carte menu for the day. Haggis, neeps and tatties (swede and potatoes) is Dh130. Also on offer are Scotch broth, smoked haddock and salmon fish pie and cranacan for dessert; a piper will be accompanying dinner throughout the evening. Authenticity should be assured: Head chef Ryan Waddell hails from rural Scotland. A “flight” of Scottish beverages is Dh310 per person. Call 04-3750324
