Dubai: Following the worldwide release of The Breakup Playlist, Filipino superstars Piolo Pascual and Sarah Geronimo said they were happy with the public's warm reception for their first movie project as a team.
Although the two artists are both regular performers at TV show ASAP, Geronimo admitted she still felt "nervous, at the same time excited". “Who will not be happy and proud to be the girlfriend of Papa P? He is so funny to work with,” she told Gulf News.
Pascual said Geronimo appears a little withdrawn when off the set, but comes alive when cameras roll. ”It’s an experience to know Sarah more. She’s a shy type of a person, but when she’s in character, she gives her all,” he told Gulf News.
The 38-year-old actor said he relished playing a rock star in the movie. “What I love about my role in the movie is that I get to play the role of a rock star and the movie was very honest, especially with Dan Villegas as our director and the screenplay of Director Tonet (Antoinette Jadaone),” he said.
Geronimo portrays a frustrated singer who finds an opportunity to fulfil her dream. “I play Trixie David, a law student with a heart for singing, for music. What makes this movie different from the roles I did before is I get to be the girlfriend of Piolo Pascual. I can relate to my role as Trixie and this is so real, it can happen to any young adult. The scenes were very real,” she said.
And how similar were their characters to their real lives? “Gino and I have similarities. We are both very determined to achieve our goals in life,” said Pascual.
For Geronimo, she shares Trixie’s passion for music. “We are similar in a sense that we both love music and we both value our parents.”
Filming the movie also allowed both artists to know each other more. “He wants to be a comedian,” Geronimo said of Pascual.
Pascual retorts, “She laughs a lot. We always work together in ASAP, but this is the first time in a movie. I discovered she is fun-loving. Aside from being a good performer and good actress, you can see that she really has a good heart as well.”
And does 26-year-old Geronimo think Pascual is such a charismatic actor? “Piolo is really a pleasure to the eyes. He is really handsome. The women on set were always thrilled to see him.”
The two stars also share the lessons they learned from each other while doing the movie. “Humility. It reminds me to be grounded because Piolo is so humble,” said Geronimo. “He also helps me to be more focused and serious on my craft – he is really serious with his work.”
Pascual said, “Every project is a learning experience. From Sarah, [it’s] professionalism. She’s so professional when it comes to work.”
When asked about a favourite scene in the movie, Pascual said it’s difficult to pick one that stands out.
“Actually, I love so many scenes in the movie because I see it as a whole. All scenes are beautiful.” Geronimo said it was the look test (which was done before they started filming) that was her favourite. “All of the scenes are beautiful, but the memorable scene for me was the look test because I felt like I was melting while doing the scene with Piolo.”
Pascual and Geronimo both say movie goers can connect with the film. “Everyone can relate with the movie. It is so real. The soundtracks in the movie were also a bonus – two songs were written by Yeng Constantino,” said Pascual.
Geronimo added: “Plus, they get to see the life and love created by the music. The scenes are very real.”
Do they believe that breakups are always bad? “Breakup also means new beginnings, a fresh start,” Pascual explained. “Sometimes we need to accept breakups to be better persons.”
Geronimo agreed: “A breakup can also be a start of something new. A new beginning.”
