Six Senses Douro Valley’s got scents

The spa at Six Senses Douro Valley, Portugal, features an Alchemy Bar at its wellness workshop. The centrepiece here is an antique carpenter’s table of monolithic proportions upon which stands an array of labelled glass bottles and jars — some antique and some newer, but all with interesting contents. Shelving behind the table also displays glass containers, mixing bowls and mortars with pestles.

Guests are invited to join a 60-minute wellness workshop designed to nourish the body and learn about a variety of herbs, fruit and spices, to develop individual blends for body scrubs, face and hair masks and lip balms. Guests also learn how to make everyday items such as home fragrances, laundry and kitchen pharmacy products with 100 per cent organic ingredients from the garden and surrounds.

Individual workshops are priced at 50 euros per person. For a personalised spa journey (250 euros per person), guests choose a body scrub, body wrap, face mask and hair mask, from the Alchemy Bar, make them along with their therapist and learn how to create the same concoctions at home from locally sourced aromatherapy herbs and other ingredients.
