Time to unwind

Aching muscles give way to relaxed bliss

Tabloid on Saturday

With most days spent caffeinated and rushing to meet deadlines, lower back aches and the weight of the world on your shoulders isn’t a rarity.

At Zen, the spa at Al Ghurair Rayhaan by Rotana, the tiffany blue interspersed with neutral tones is instantly calming. With the better half abroad, my Valentine for the day was my best friend. Our therapist asked us our problem areas and the type of lifestyle we led and immediately recommended the active muscle release massage followed by an express facial. Sounded like exactly what we needed.

Changing into fluffy white robes, we first headed to the Jacuzzi to loosen all those tight muscles followed by more heat therapy in the sauna. Oh how wonderful it would be to do this on a regular basis — and with your better half. However, the spa has a no mix policy and even the Valentine’s specials are carried out in separate treatment rooms, where the therapist led us after cool down.

The treatment began with hot stone therapy for the feet — anything that gives special attention to feet is stellar in my book. Face down on the bed, my therapist next kneaded a ginger, black pepper and rosemary oil to stimulate, invigorate and release aches and pains. The sad thing about good things is they all have to end and this was no exception.

Oh, but there was still more.

Little do we realise the battering our faces get on a daily basis. The daily make up, dust and dirt that builds up was sloughed off before a quick mask and toning serum was applied with a pressure point massage.

And just like that it was over. Hello life of caffeine, a nagging back ache, a nightly 5-minute cleanse and moisture routine and chasing the A-listers.
