No Escape

Want goosebumps? You must see this. It’s about something that a lot of expats might initially relate to — moving your family across the world to start a new life in a new country. That’s what we’ve done… but hopefully nothing this sinister will EVER happen to us. It did happen, however, to the Dwyer family.

Owen Wilson takes on a not-too-familiar serious role as Jack Dwyer, a father of two, who, with his wife, has to escape from a war zone in their new home in Southeast Asia.

It’s scary stuff — lots of action, tense moments and some good performances, Pierce Brosnan also stars as Hammond — a good guy who will do whatever he can to help.

This film isn’t without controversy and is banned in Cambodia — purely based on the trailer — so let’s see if this changes now it’s finally been released.

Stung

There aren’t many films based on dangerous bees so surely it was about time right? Well that’s what Adam Artesy thought — so he decided to write one. The setting is a country manor where two young caterers have been brought in to host. Everything is going well (bar the odd drink spillage) until these giant bees appear.

Now when we say giant, we mean 2 metre tall horrible nasty predators that you really don’t want to mess with. The party try and hide from these creatures; if they get stung then that’s it, game over. If you’re already a little scared of all things that buzz, steer clear. If, however, the idea of ‘attack of the killer wasps’ is pleasing to you — go see it!

Hitman – Agent 47

An assassin (he goes by simply 47) is like Bond on the hottest heat the UAE has ever seen — think 007 but with bigger guns, faster cars, and gun shoot outs that seem so unbelievable they’re just about believable.

The reason this guy is so good? He’s not real. He’s agent 47 because he’s the 47th prototype that was created to make the perfect killing machine, an elite assassin created by Dr Litvenko. But now he needs to be stopped and his daughter Katia (Hannah Ware) could be the only person to do so.

If you’re a fan of video games this might ring a bell as this movie is based on the video game Hitman. Agent 47 was originally due to be played by Paul Walker but sadly after his death he had to be re-cast so Rupert Friend stepped in. Zachary Quinto co-stars in this new thriller.

Southpaw

Definitely the film of the week. Jake Gyllenhaal is almost unrecognisable as Billy “The Great” Hope, a pro boxer. The reigning light heavyweight champion of the world, with an adorable kid and gorgeous wife (Rachel McAdams), he’s got it all, but when it all goes south, he hits the rockiest of bottoms.

After an awards ceremony where Billy gets recognised, he also gets challenged and disaster strikes. He loses everything quickly, so he has to start again from scratch. So he does, and his determination sees him back in the ring.

Gyllenhaal has transformed his body dramatically for this role; talk about pushing the limits and breaking down boundaries — he does it, times 100! There are some great performances in this — Forest Whitaker and a little bit of 50 Cent, to name just a few.
