Nocturnal Animals, a divorce thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, and directed by Tom Ford, will screen at the 13th edition of Dubai International Film Festival this year, along with 11 other titles added to the Cinema of the World category. The festival runs between December 7-14 at Madinat Jumeirah.

Nocturnal Animals follows a separated couple who discover dark truths about each other.

The film is joined by A Monster Calls, a Liam Neeson and Felicity Jones fantasy film by Spanish director J.A. Bayona, wherein a 12-year-old boy has to fend for himself when his mother falls ill and gets a helping hand from a strange creature.

Back in reality, Jackie, a Pablo Larrain film, looks at what happened to Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman) after her husband’s infamous assassination.

Using art as healing, One More Time with Feeling, a 3D, black-and-white music documentary, features Nick Cave, whose 15-year-old son died after falling off of a cliff. Cave utilises music to deal with the tragedy.

Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams star in Manchester by the Sea, directed by Kenneth Lonergan, which tells the story of a sudden family death that leaves a teenage boy in the care of his uncle Lee, who relocates to his hometown to be with him.

Hotel Salvation, by Indian director Shubhashish Bhutiani and starring Adil Hussain, tests the limits of family loyalties when main character Rajiv is torn between caring for his wife and daughter or travelling with his sick father.

I Am Not Madame Bovary by Chinese director Feng Xiaogang and starring Bingbing Fan tracks an ongoing court case of a woman who, betrayed by her conman ex, spends a decade appealing against the Chinese legal system.

Their Finest, by Danish director Lone Scherfig and starring Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin, follows a crew of British filmmakers who try to create uplifting propaganda film during the Second World War.

The Oath, directed by and starring Baltasar Kormakur, the man behind Everest, follows a respected surgeon who goes to extremes to get his daughter out of a world of drugs and crime.

Other films include the playful short Take Me Home by Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, who died earlier this year. Kiarostami is also the subject of a documentary by his friend and fellow director, Seifollah Samadian: 76 Minutes and 15 Seconds with Abbas Kiarostami. It documents Kiarostami’s career and their 25 years of friendship.

20th Century Women, by director Mike Mills and starring Greta Gerwig, Anette Benning, Elle Fanning and Billy Crudup, follows three women who are experiencing movements of love and freedom in the 1970s.
