The movie 5 Rupya is a touching tale of love and family.
Based on renowned Indian author Premchand’s famous short story Eidgah, the movie follows Ameena (Shabana Azmi) and her grandson Hamid (Yohan Panjuani) during their Eid celebrations. Ameena and Hamid live very simple, humble lives in the foothills of the Himalayas. Ameena is a tailor raising her dead son’s child on her own — and the great pains she has taken to raise the child is evident. Hamid, on the other hand is like most kids his age — impulsive and naughty, but kind and respectful. During Eid, a five rupee coin Ameena had saved for Hamid as a gift is lost, and this triggers a series of unexpected incidents.
The focus is on the heart-warming bond the two share, as it sheds light not only Ameena’s love for Hamid but mostly Hamid’s regard for his grandmother.
This movie is good old storytelling. There was minimal drama, show and songs, very unlike your standard Bollywood movie. And Azmi, as always, flawlessly embodies her character.
Some of the songs, however, should have been cut out altogether as they felt disconnected and unnecessary. Moreover, the film had more filler scenes than necessary and often felt drawn out, adding little by way of plot.
Nevertheless, it’s a perfect example of the beauty that sleeps in simplicity — it will tug at your heartstrings and bring forth a waterfall of tears.
