So far we have established how yoga helps improve the immune system. Here we will discuss why yoga is more beneficial than other forms of exercise. Most exercises focus on the physical aspects alone, whereas yoga works on multiple dimensions of the body, combining your breath with a workout and ultimately quietening your mind. Yes, it is true that a peaceful mind leads to better immunity for the body.

In yoga, we not only work on the body with asanas but use techniques to improve attention and awareness, regulate emotional energies and improve our sense of self.

Now, you may ask how all this can translate into better immunity? Research shows that learning to regulate our emotional energies help us be more aware of the body, the mind tends towards positive thinking, automatically having a positive impact on the hormones, thus functioning at its best.

Let us look at a posture that has this effect on our body and mind.

Note: Though these postures are easy to do and can be done by all at home, as with all exercise, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before starting them.

ARDHA BADDHA PADMA PASCHIMOTTANASANA

Though the name sounds complicated, the posture by itself is simple yet effective. It is a combination of two simple poses “padmasana” and “paschimottanasana”.

PROCEDURE

1 Sit with your legs stretched out and your hands by your side.

2 Fold your right leg and place your foot on your left thigh.

3 Use your right hand to hold your right foot from around the back, as shown. Raise your left hand and inhale.

4 Now exhale and hold your left leg with your left hand.

5 Slowly try to bring your forehead to your knee.

6 Hold the posture for 10-30 seconds.

7 Repeat the same with the other leg.

BENEFITS

This asana benefits the liver and spleen— which play a part in the digestive processes. The liver controls digestion of fats and contributes to the control of your metabolism; the spleen purifies the blood and strengthens the immune system. Once the liver is working correctly the spleen is automatically corrected. Gastric problems and constipation are also alleviated with this asana.

CAUTION

Persons suffering with knee or hip injuries must practice this posture under professional guidance.
