Our body’s immune system is a lot stronger than we know. The immune cells are like an army waiting to fight any enemy that enters the body and guards the body well. In yoga, we believe that the easiest way to improve the efficiency of the immune system is by doing heart opening postures. These stimulate blood flow to the thymus, an organ nestled behind the breastbone that is instrumental in the growth of T-cells — the main cells of the immune system. Let us look at one such posture which is highly beneficial in strengthening your immune system.

Note: Though these postures are easy to do and can be done by all at home, as with all exercise. However, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before starting them.

MATSYASANA( the fish pose): in Sanskrit matsya means fish, hence the name. Traditionally, this posture is referred to as the destroyer of all diseases and used for building immunity in the body. This posture has an effect on the complete body — removing fatigue, anxiety and stress.

Procedure:

1. Begin by sitting in padmasana, as shown, keeping your back straight.

2. Placing your elbows and forearms on the floor close to your body, slowly inhale and push the chest out and arch your back till it is comfortable for you to hold this position and drop your head.

3. As you exhale, place the crown of your head on the floor and hold your big toes.

4. Remain in this position for 10-30 seconds.

5. Slowly release the posture by straightening the back first, then unlocking the legs.

6. Hug your knees to the chest and relax your back.

Benefits:

1. Stretches the hips and the muscles between the ribs.

2. Stretches and stimulates the muscles of the stomach and front of the neck.

3. Strengthens the muscles of the upper back and the back of the neck

4. Improves posture.

5. Alleviates respiratory problems.

6. Relieves constipation and reduces menstrual pains.

Caution:

People suffering from lower back pain or high blood pressure should avoid doing this posture.
