Some sleep experts suggest the solution to those having difficulty sleeping is to attune your body to a certain frequency, or beat, that will help it relax. But how do you "attune your body"?

The makers of the Philip Stein sleep bracelet claim they have the answer. Launched recently, the sleep bracelet, in simple terms, uses natural frequency technology to help calm your body down and to give you undisturbed sleep for six to seven hours.

The brand's natural frequency watches - called wellbeing watches - are the favourites of several celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Madonna and media mogul Rupert Murdoch. According to the brochure, the company harnessed the technology used in its wellbeing watches to create the sleep bracelet.

I was a little sceptical when I read about the watch and its claims. So when I saw Will Stein, the jet-setting president and co-founder of Philip Stein, looking completely relaxed and well rested at 8am, one of the first questions I posed to him was whether he had worn the sleep bracelet the previous night. "Oh yes, I did," said Will, before giving me a low-down on his company's fascinating invention.

How it works

Explaining the concept, Will said, "A metal disc in the bracelet possesses a particular frequency that when transferred to the wearer helps balance the energy flow in his body. The interaction between the person's energy field and the frequency in the bracelet leads to feelings of harmony and stress relief… The sleep bracelet aids your body to reach its natural frequency and that calms you down enough for you to enjoy undisturbed sleep for several hours.

"But be your own judge," Will said, before handing mea bracelet to try at home. One of the first things I noticed is that unlike some watches, the bracelet is light and the Alcantara strap quite soft.

Putting it to the test

For years, my sleep pattern has been the same. While I don't struggle to fall asleep at night, the quality of sleep has never been good. I was not sure how well it would work the first night I put it on because earlier in the evening I had heard some distressing news about a friend. I was sure I would be haunted by those thoughts.

Initially, for the first two hours, I didn't experience anything different and I began to have my doubts about whether the bracelet would work. But as the night progressed I fell asleep and when I woke up the next morning, I felt quite relaxed. I was expecting to begin the day with a headache (because I was stressed about the news I'd heard), but I was fine. Although I did not sleep for seven or eight hours, the quality of the sleep was good.

I tried the bracelet for a few more nights and was again surprised by the effect it had on me, particularly one of the nights when I was extremely exhausted after having attended a late-night party. I slept undisturbed until morning and on waking found I was not as tired as I usually would be after a late night. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when a colleague commented the next morning that I looked quite rested and relaxed.
