If someone asks me this month where to go for dinner, I’ve only got one answer: Get yourself over to The Hide. tabloid! had a sneak preview of the brand new self-described “meatery” at the Al Qasr and it’s a winning combination of butchery and beverages.

The Hide replaces MJ’s Steakhouse with something at once modern and old-school: The drinks are Prohibition-era; the sound system plays Chvrches; and the meat ranges from the fashionable-again flank to a gigantic rib.

Yes, it’s pretty hipster (the staff wear bow ties and braces), but it’s also serving up well-executed food and a relaxed yet classy atmosphere. Highlights from the menu include the aforementioned flank steak with mushrooms (this cut unanimously trumped the rib and the strip steak for flavour and texture); starters of crispy calf’s tongue salad with pickled radish (put your qualms aside — it’s a do-not-miss) and surf-and-turf gnocci; and a side of blue cheese potato gratin.

Bread is baked for you once you walk in the door. Desserts is where we reach peak hipster, with the Campfire Smores served in a jar. Nonetheless, with layers of chocolate, silky marshmallow and crunchy peanut butter cookie, it’s worth it.

Steaks are from Dh165; a three-course meal will come to approximately Dh350 per head, without drinks. Call 04-4323232.
