For fans of William Shakespeare, celebrations for his 400th birth anniversary continue. The Junction Dubai theatre is hosting a screening of 37 short films of 10 minutes each, with each film covering one of the Bard’s play, spread across nine months. Called Shakespeare in the Sands, the first event, which will see 10 films being screened, will be held from October 20 to 22. The session will be followed by a panel discussion that includes local and international actors, organisers say. Names would be revealed at a later date.

Plays to be screened at Volume 1 include classics such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, Othello, Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew. Each film explores one of Shakespeare’s plays and includes scenes shot in the locations Shakespeare imagined when he wrote them. Think Cleopatra in front of the Pyramids, Shylock in Venice’s former Jewish Ghetto, Hamlet on the rocks of Elsinore and more.

The short films were commissioned by Shakespeare’s Globe and first screened as ‘The Complete Walk’, a viewing event set up along the 4km stretch between Westminster Bridge and Tower Bridge.

“Never before has there been a series of events which were so complete, that they were a full education and entertainment package. We are also one of the few countries globally who have the chance of witnessing it now and here. The panel discussions, workshops, monologues, and competitions just make them more relevant and experiential for the people of UAE,” said Asad Raza Khan, a local actor and producer of the show.

The Junction Dubai is located at Al Serkal Avenue. Tickets are price Dh100 for the first event and available on www.thejunctiondubai.com. Call 04-3388525.
