British actor Hugh Grant, with his narration, brought to life an adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince, which premiered Thursday night at Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi.

The musical tells the story of a pilot who crashes in the desert and meets a young boy from a different planet before he sets off into his journey in space. 40 players and 13 singers united their rich sounds with Grant’s narration.

The family concert succeeded in delivering the tale’s core theme of adventure through effective narration, music and singing, drawing the audience into the young boy’s journey. The magical journey was not your everyday representation of visual effects or narration but was like a trance where the audience could experience each musical note live on stage.

What made the repertoire of the ensemble remarkable was that is wasn’t something people typically listen to, and I think that was one of the main reasons people kept applauding in between songs.
