DAY FIVE, Tuesday, June 8, 2010: Sibling 'support'

I didn't actually eat very much at all today. Breakfast was a banana and lunch was another banana along with some almonds and a few soya beans. Amazingly, I don't feel very hungry and spend the rest of the day drinking rooibos tea, the only hot substance to pass my lips in the last five days.

My sister, who also lives in Dubai, returned to the UAE in the early hours of this morning after a short break in Madrid. She has always professed an interest in the diet and made me a salad for dinner consisting of lettuce leaves, cucumber, red pepper, butternut and strawberries. However, she couldn't resist adding a few pieces of grilled halloumi cheese to her plate. Less than an hour later, she was tearing open a packet of peanut M&Ms; it looks like I am on my own again.

The swimming pool in my apartment block has also been closed for maintenance work, so exercise this evening consisted of a brisk 20 minute walk on the treadmill. I am not really sure if I can take too much more of the diet even though the days have passed by reasonably quickly. My thoughts are increasingly frequently turning to a plate of hot cooked food.

I have been drinking a lot of water but my appetite for raw fruit and vegetables is on the wane. This evening, I did try and eat half a watermelon, which was placed inside a massive saucepan, because I felt I really had to eat something. But I only ate a few mouthfuls before it was sent spinning down the rubbish chute. Oh well, never mind - there are only two more days to go until a return to normality.
