Jewellery sales touch Dh240m in first week of DSF
Jewellery worth Dh240 million was sold during the first week of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), an industry group said on Friday.
Dubai: Jewellery worth Dh240 million was sold during the first week of the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), an industry group said on Friday.
Though high gold prices have tempted many to opt for diamond jewellery, the demand for 22-carat and 24-carat gold jewellery remains strong because of high demand from Indian and Arab customers, according to the Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group (DGJG).
"The increase in numbers of visitors and shoppers has definitely helped the jewellery trade. Though prices are high, they have not dampened sales," said Tawhid Abdullah, managing director of DGJG.
The group is projecting jewellery sales of Dh1.2 billion this DSF, an increase of 20 per cent over the last event.
DGJG said the daily DSF raffle draws for one kg of gold have also encouraged jewellery buying.
To enter the draw, a customer must purchase Dh500 worth of gold jewellery from any of the outlets participating in the shopping festival.
DGJG has also introduced a special "Win with the winner" scheme for participating retailers, whereby the customer service staff could get a cash award of Dh3,000 if the winning coupon was obtained from that particular outlet.
So far the group has given away six kg of gold in daily raffle draws since the beginning of DSF 2008 and another 26 kg will be given away during the event.
