Sharjah: Power supply was disrupted in several parts of Sharjah, forcing schools to send students and staff home early on Wednesday.

A technical glitch disrupted supply just after 9am, a Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) official said.

In a statement to Gulf News, Sewa attributed the power cut to illegal connections by some residents, which lead to excess loading and power cuts.

The supply was restored after four hours.

The officials said the failure affected large parts of Muwailih and Industrial area No. 18. Several schools located in the area sent students home at around 10:30am.

Technicians were working at the site and power was being restored in phases. An attendant at Sewa emergency hotline said several calls were received since 9am.

Meanwhile, SEWA held campaign to end the problem of illegal connections and held inspections in different areas.
