What are they?

Last month, Snapchat revealed one of their latest hardware products called the Spectacles. The idea behind the device is to record video using a camera with a 115-degree lens in ‘spectacles’, thus mimicking how the human eye actually sees things.

How do they work?

The device is said to be easy to use. You tap the button on the top left-hand corner of the sunglasses and it records a snippet for 10 seconds. You can continuously record a total of 30 seconds by click the button three times over the period with an interval of 10 seconds. While there is an outward light which is an indicator for when the device is recording, there is an internal one too to let you know while it is working.

The Spectacles can work on their own and store videos until you connect them to your smartphone.

Which operating system’s do the spectacles work with?

They can be paired with Android as well as iOS. On Google Android, you can connect to your spectacles using Wi-Fi and on Apple iOS you can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth both. The videos transfer to your ‘Memories’ in the Snapchat application and can be shared with your story or your Snap friends from there.

What’s the battery-life like on the Spectacles?

The battery-life on the Spectacles is said to be about 16 minutes of video. Now if you think that’s less, it isn’t. 160 minutes = 960 seconds = 96 snap videos. If 96 snaps in a day isn’t enough for you, you’ve need to rethink your life. The Spectacles also come with a case which can charge the device up to 4 times.

Are they weather/water proof?

Snapchat says the Spectacles aren’t waterproof and users should even avoid using them in extreme temperatures. Well there’s goes the idea of using them during the UAE’s Summer!

How much will it cost and when will it be available in the UAE?

The Spectacles are currently available in a limited quantity for $130 (Dh477.75) and only in the US for now. They are currently available in the UAE on local online marketplace Dubizzle, before you check it out, be warned, they are incredibly expensive. Click here for more
