So Nokia’s new 41-megapixel camera comes with a phone as well. The 808 PureView received the best Best Mobile Device award at the mobile industry trade show Mobile World Congress 2012, as well as an award for Best Imaging Innovation for 2012 from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA). So does it live up to the hype?

The camera is impressive and at full power, users can capture an image, zoom in, reframe and crop the picture to expose previously unseen levels of detail and depth.

The PureView’s camera has three settings — Automatic, Scenes and Creative. The automatic mode is reserved for simple point-and-shoot; the scenes mode gives photographers a little more freedom to choose their specific setting, and lastly, my favourite — the creative mode.

The creative mode has three custom settings so users can to pre-set the sensor mode, resolution (8MP, 5MP and 2MP), aspect ratio (16:9 and 4:3), JPEG quality, colour tones, capture mode, saturation, contrast and sharpness. These settings allow users to set the camera to deliver exactly what they want.
The PureView’s camera is stunning, much better than several of the point-and-shoots we have handled.

The Xenon flash is a little too bright, though I doubt that’s a con. The images look brilliant when displayed on your computer or TV and, at full resolution, average over 10MB in size.

So does it live up to the hype? Without a doubt! Besides, you get a pretty decent phone along with it.
