If you’ve been in Dubai long enough, you’ll know where QD’s is. The waterside spot at the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club — outdoors in the winter, inside a tent during the hot months — has survived the city’s changing and competitive culinary scene for many years. And so has its iftar.

There’s been a bit of a change-up this year in the Ramadan tent, though, thanks mostly to the Uefa Euro 2016. Giant screens are everywhere so football fans don’t miss the action. For the rest of us, there’s always the amazing view of the Dubai skyline.

We were sat on the edge of the water, shielded from the heat outside by clear plastic panels, and therefore still had an uninterrupted view. Inside, the place was packed for iftar and right before maghrib, the queue at the buffet was already snaking around the tent.

There was a lot of food, but it was rather standard iftar fare. And some of the items were disappointing — like the diluted laban, the slightly off hummus and the not-so-fresh ‘fresh juices’. But the advantage of having many options is that you can make people forget everything else. By the time we tried the chicken wings, the cheese rolls, the shish taouk and the shrimp harra, all was forgiven, and the conversation flowed. Don’t miss the kushari and the chicken kofta. They were my top picks, along with the grills.

Food wise, the menu is pretty much standard iftar offering. But QD’s has a vibe that’s not found anywhere else. Maybe it’s in the casual atmosphere, or in the shisha pipes that are brought out right after dinner. Or the view. Whatever the reason, this is still a Dubai must-go-to place during Ramadan and beyond.
