The next PechaKucha night in Sharjah (PKN SHJ) takes place at the city’s design space 1971 for the first time on June 13.
The public event is being held for the seventh time in Sharjah, and is named after the Japanese word for “chit-chat”. This month’s event is focused on the environment, and is encouraging those working in “green” roles — such as environmental protection and UAE sustainability startup projects — to go to the multi-functional exhibition and discussion space on Flag Island from 8.20–10pm.
The free and fast-paced event allows each presenter 20 seconds to show 20 images in a slide presentation.
“PechaKucha Nights is a great platform for those who aim to make a difference in their communities to share their creative thoughts and projects in a casual and fun setting,” says Dana Al Sadek, PKN SHJ organiser. “This is the first themed PKN event, and we received many impressive applications from prospective presenters, which proves the importance of sustainability in our daily lives.”
Speakers include: Matthew King, cofounder of eco-conscious performance apparel brand BaemBu; organic composters Jo Marengo and JanineSheard, founders of Bokashi; Tatiana Abella, founder of GOUMBOOK, an online information platform on green practices for environmentally conscious people and businesses; Ameera Al Haranki, a student from RAK who completed a journey to Antarctica and witnessed the effects of global warming; Amal Taryam, a student at the American University in Sharjah who has helped create contemporary interior designs out of recycled wood; Lamis Harib, entrepreneur behind the first Arab-owned biodisposables design and supply business, BioD Packing & Packaging; and Ada Natoli, founder of the Dolphin Watch Project, the first dolphin survey conducted in Dubai waters.
