Dubai: The third round of the ‘Fruit and Vegetable’ healthy food distribution campaign for labourers started its first Friday event recently, with three more events to go.

Launched by the Dubai Mums Helping Hand Facebook group, in collaboration with SmartLife Foundation, the campaign aims to improve the diets of workers by ensuring that fruits and vegetables are a part of their daily nutrition.

“During this four-week programme, we intend reaching 4,000 workers,” said Stephanie Sutherland, founder of the ‘Free healthy food Fridays’ campaign.

For the next two Fridays (November 11, 18), volunteers can join the group by brining 10 grocery carrier bags with a mix of fruit and vegetables weighing at least 2kg each. “Consider items that don’t smash as the bags move quickly. For example, if you want to give tomatoes or grapes, etc, pack them in a take-out box or in something that won’t smash easily,” said Sutherland.

Volunteers also have the option of donating the bags without coming along on the distribution trips, as the group bus has limited seating.

“You are welcome to bring additional items also. Towels are a big hit and we encourage you to bring towels you are no longer using. Toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, caps, new T-shirts are also encouraged — but please put them in a separate bag,” said Sutherland.

To join the distribution group, pick a Friday and comment on the Facebook page post with the date you would like to join and the number of people that are coming with you.

“If you receive a ‘like’ on your comment by organisers Cleone Botha or Stephanie Sutherland, you are confirmed for that date. One week before the event, you will receive an informational personal message from us with more details. If you’re not sure that you can make it, please only sign up when you are sure so we can be certain to include as many people as possible,” explained Sutherland.
